Opposite to Shakee of Canton is a small island called Shamian, where were the concession area of Britain and France in the 1920s. In response to the Shanghai Massacre on 30 May 1925, a protest against British imperialism was held in Shakee on 23 June 1925. It resulted the Shakee Massacre that over 200 causalities were shot dead by British and French forces from the opposite bank. It is the direct cause of the Canton-Hong Kong General Strike. M. Sternberg was a stationer and publisher based in Hong Kong from the 1900s to 1920s.
