Sir Paul Chater owned a rich collection of paintings on China, Hong Kong and Macao, including the landscape drawings of Hong Kong (drawn before British colonisation or in the early days of colonisation) and the portraits of some important persons of Hong Kong. Part of his collection was displayed at the exhibition halls. This painting does not come from Chater’s collection. But it shows the environment of Hong Kong Island in the early days of British colonisation. It was drawn by German artist William Heine (1827 – 1885) in the 1850s. At the bottom of the painting are the quarry workers at East Point (i.e. the east boundary of City of Victoria; around now Causeway Bay). At the back is Victoria Peak. City of Victoria had begun to develop.
